Dal Dhokli is a perfect Sunday one-pot meal popular across the regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan. For Gujarati people, it is the ultimate comfort food. It is a one-pot meal dish and vegetarian recipe.

Ingredients
  • For Dhokli :
  • Whole wheat flour / aata - 2 cup
  • Oil - 2 tsp
  • Salt - 1 tsp, as per taste
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tbsp
  • Carom seeds/ajwain - ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
  • Red chili powder - 1 tsp
  • Water - ½ - ¾ cup, as per need
  • For Dal :
  • Penguin pea dal / Tur dal - ½ cup
  • Salt - 1 tsp, as per taste
  • Meethi powder - ¼ tsp
  • Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
  • Dried kokum flowers - 3 - 4
  • OR
  • Tamarind - 1 tbsp
  • Tomato - 1 chopped
  • Red chili powder - 1 - 2 tsp, as per taste
  • Coriander powder - 1 ½ tsp
  • Garam masala - ¼ tsp
  • Peanuts - handful
  • Jaggery - 3 - 4 tbsp
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Dry red chili - 1 - 2
  • Curry leaves - 2 spring
  • Cloves - 2
  • Cinnamon - 1-inch piece
  • Hing - ⅛ tsp
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tbsp
  • Lemon - Juice of 1 lemon
Instructions ( 1 cup = 250 ml, 1 tbsp = 15 ml, 1 tsp = 5 ml)
  1. Wash the tur dal properly and soak in enough water at least for 30 min.
  2. Same way wash kokum flowers and soak them in ½ cup water.
  3. Add dal along with water in a pressure cooker.
  4. Add salt, turmeric powder, and methi powder.
  5. Cook open or pressure cook for 3 - 4 whistles.
  6. When pressure is released, open the cooker.
  7. Add chopped tomatoes and blend dal using a hand blender.
  8. Add red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, 1 spring of curry leaves,soaked kokum with water and 1 tsp of oil.
  9. Boil it on slow flame.
  10. Meanwhile, make dough for dhokli.
  11. Add flour, salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, sesame seeds, carom seeds, peanuts, and 1 tbsp oil.
  12. Mix well.
  13. Gradually add water and make a stiff dough.
  14. Apply oil and let it rest for some time.
  15. After some time, divide the dough into 7 - 8 equal size balls.
  16. Flatten one ball and roll out a thin roti/circle out of it.
  17. Cut them into diamond/square / the desired shape.
  18. When dal comes to a boil, add one by one dhokli.
  19. Stir continuously otherwise they will stick together.
  20. Same way roll out all rotis, cut them into square dhokli, and add into boiling dal.
  21. Cook covered for 15 min and stir at regular intervals.
  22. Now cook open until dhokli is cooked.
  23. Add jaggery and mix well.
  24. In a tadka pan add oil and ghee.
  25. Add mustard seeds, cloves, cinnamon, and dried red chilis.
  26. When mustard seeds start to pop up, add cumin seeds.
  27. Add curry leaves and hing.
  28. Pour it on prepared dal dhokli.
  29. Gently mix. Turn off the flame.
  30. Add fresh lemon juice and coriander leaves.
  31. Serve hot dal dhokli with ghee, chopped onion, and roasted papad.
  32. You can also pair it with steamed rice and ghee.
