This Black Gram Curry ( Kala Chana Curry ) in is a delicious and healthy Indian curry. Black Gram Curry is a very nutritious dish, where black chickpeas are made with curd and gram flour to enhance the taste.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup black gram or kala chana
  • 4 – 5 cup water
  • 1 fine chopped onion ( medium size )
  • 3 – 4 fine chopped green chilies
  • 5 – 6 curry leaves
  • 3 tbsp gram flour or besan
  • 1 ½ cup thick butter milk or ½ cup curd
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Pinch of asafetida ( hing )
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder or according to taste
  • 1 tsp coriander powder or according to taste
  • ¼ tsp homemade garam masala
  • Pinch of dry mango powder
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Salt according to taste ( 1 – 1 ¼ tsp )
Instructions ( 1 cup = 250 ml, 1 tbsp = 15 ml, 1 tsp = 5 ml)
  1. Wash the black gram properly for 3 to 4 times.
  2. Soak them into 4 -5 cup of boiling water for 6 – 7 hours or overnight.
  3. Drain the water and pressure cook the soaked black gram and 1 tsp salt with 4 cup of water for 5 – 6 whistles. After that keep on simmer for 5 – 7 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile fine chop the onion and green chili and garlic. If you want you can prepare a paste of garlic into mortar-pastel.
  5. Add besan into butter milk or curd + 1 cup water and blend nicely with hand blender.
  6. When cooker will release all its air, open it and drain the chana and keep it aside.
  7. Heat the oil in non stick pan.
  8. Add cumin seeds when oil is medium hot. When cumin seeds start to crackle, add hing, chopped green chilies, curry leaves and chopped garlic. Saute on slow flame for a minute.
  9. Add chopped onion. Saute till onion get transparent.
  10. Add turmeric powder and mix well.
  11. Add drained and boiled black gram. Mix well.
  12. Add red chili powder, coriander powder and salt. Mix well and cook for 2 minutes.
  13. Add besan and curd paste into it. Cook till curry turns into thick consistency.
  14. Add garam masala, dry mango powder and chopped coriander leaves. Here your black gram curry is ready to serve.
  15.
