Caramelized Onion Rice is a quick and easy recipe of rice laced with onions. Apart from jeera rice or steamed rice, it’s an addition to my rice recipe when I wish to have only dal and rice for meal. This simple dish required very few ingredients and easy to make. A quick mix of fried onion and long grained rice makes easy to cook and simply amazing homemade onion rice recipe. Caramelized onion gives nice color and flavor to rice.

I got the inspiration to make this onion rice recipe from Bhugal Chawal recipe which is a famous Sindhi recipe. You can even do lots of variations in this rice dish and make it comfortable meal with dal or raita. You can mix boiled veggies of your choice.

Varieties of dal which goes well with onion rice : Teen dal, dal fry, dal tadka, chana dal, masoor dal, Dal Palak. Cucumber raita and roasted papad will complete your meal.

Step-by-Step Caramelized Onion Rice Recipe :

Step 1 : Rinse the rice properly. Soak them in enough water for 20 -25 minute.

Step 2 : Drain the water and keep is aside.

Step 3 : Meanwhile thinly slice the onion. Keep it aside.

Step 4 : Heat the oil in non stick pan.

Step 5 : Add cumin seeds, cloves and cardamom.

Step 6 : When they start to release aroma, Add sliced onion and ½ tsp salt.

Step 7 : Saute onion on medium flame till they turn brown. Add red chili powder and salt. Add water.

Step 8 : When water comes to boil, add soaked and drained rice.

Step 9 : Cover the pan using lid. Cook the rice on medium slow flame till rice get cooked completely. Stir in between. Do not over mix otherwise rice will break.

Step 10 : Turn off the flame. Mix well the cooked onion rice.

Step 11 : Serve warm onion rice with teen dal or any variety of Punjabi style dal, fresh curd or cucumber raita.

Ingredients
  • 1 ½ cup long grained rice or pulao rice
  • 4 medium size onion
  • 2 black cardamom
  • 3 – 4 cloves or laung
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt according to taste ( approx. 1 ½ tsp Salt )
  • 3 cup water or according to need
Instructions ( 1 cup = 250 ml, 1 tbsp = 15 ml, 1 tsp = 5 ml)
