Chutneys !! Each cuisine has its version of chutneys. Coconut chutney belongs to south Indian cuisine. It goes with all the dishes like dosa, uttapam or idli.

Why you should add chutney into your meal :

Coconut chutney is not only delicious but having n number of health benefits. Coconut is the main ingredient of chutney. It is a good source of Potassium and B-complex and rich in vitamins, and minerals. It boosts up the immune system, soothes the digestion, and increases the good level of cholesterol.

Here I have prepared the simplest version of coconut chutney. Tempering is optional. You can add garlic and tamarind too.

Coconut chutney belongs to south Indian cuisine. It goes with all the dishes like dosa, uttapam or idli.

Ingredients
  • Coconut – ½ cup
  • Water – ¼ + ¼ cup
  • Ginger – 1 inch
  • Green chili - 1 chopped
  • Roasted gram dal – 2 tbsp
  • Salt according to taste
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp or more
  • Filtered Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Urad dal – ¼ tsp
  • Curry leaves – 5 to 6
  • Broken chilies – 1 or 2
  • Hing – a pinch
Instructions ( 1 cup = 250 ml, 1 tbsp = 15 ml, 1 tsp = 5 ml)
  1. In a chutney bowl add coconut, ginger, chili, salt, and lemon juice.
  2. Blend without adding water.
  3. Scrap sides.
  4. Add a ¼ cup of water.
  5. While blending chutney, add a more ¼ cup of water.
  6. Blend until smooth. Prepare a smooth chutney.
  7. If required add more water, adjust the consistency of chutney.
  8. Taste it and add more salt and chili if required.
  9. Heat tempering pan, add oil.
  10. Add mustard seeds. When they crackle add urad dal.
  11. Add broken chilies, curry leaves, and hing.
  12. Pour tadka on prepared chutney.
  13. Serve with paratha, chilla or choice of your south Indian dishes.
Notes
Tempering is optional.
You can add garlic and tamarind too.
